Design story
The sights, sounds and smells of the countryside are part of the reason that we love cycling. Every weekend we get on our bikes and leave the city in search of new places to explore and hills to climb. We’re lucky that cycling gives us such an easy way into the countryside, but the way that we experience nature is changing fast.
Over the past 25 years scientists, as well as the general public, have recorded which species of birds visit each of over 200,000 sites in Europe and North America. More recently, scientists have combined these counts with recordings of individual bird species to reconstruct soundscapes from the past, and compare them with what we have today. The results are stark - the quality, diversity and abundance of bird songs has plummeted in recent years.
Sound is one of the key ways in which we interact with nature, and it has a huge effect on both our physical and mental health. We want to ensure that our future generations get to experience nature as we have. The danger is that peoples’ perceptions of nature deteriorate with natural environments, resulting in decreased advocacy for conservation.
"one of the fundamental pathways through which humans engage with nature is in chronic decline, with potentially widespread implications for human health and well-being”
- S. J. Butler -
The design of our Sound Scape jersey is inspired by the changing sounds of the countryside. We took counts of different species of birds in London, and recordings of their songs. Complex sounds are made up of a mix of simple sound waves at different frequencies. We decomposed the bird songs into these harmonic frequencies and reconstructed them only keeping the most important harmonics from each bird. Each wave that you see on the jersey is a reconstructed version of a song from a different bird. Thankfully, there are still too many species of birds in London to put them all on one jersey, so the ones you see are the most common: wood pigeon, rook, skylark, magpie, herring gull, blue tit, and robin.

Gilet, along with being a perfect colour match for the jersey, fits perfectly and makes for a seamless cohesive look on the bike. The fabric is more of wind stop material than a stretchy breathable one. Thus it does a great job of keeping you warm on fresh mornings; and would be perfect to avoid wind chill on Alpine descents. Great bit of kit overall, would recommend. Would only ask for some elastication on the back pockets for some security
